I checked the thermostat with soap solution and my innotek gas detector wand, and did not find any leaks there. However, I've got an appliance technician coming out this afternoon and so I'm fully expecting to be wolfing down a tombstone and some fresh baked toll house cookies for dinner tonight.
The appliance guy on the phone laughed a little when he asked the brand and I said "Chambers." But it didn't faze him. He went ahead and scheduled the service call.
Mark,
Good luck with your appliance guy.... I am not quite at the phase you are with my Chambers but hope to be there soon... Do you happen to have any photo's of how the service door mechanism attaches? My door wasn't working properly when I picked her up and I can't figure out where to attach the springs.... I poured over your photo's of the restore but didn't see any of the area in which I need.... I figured that you probably had many more photo's than you posted on Flickr and perhaps you had a clear one of the area..... Anyway, good luck with the tech and let us know how that pizza tastes... BTW, I really enjoyed the photo's of the blue flame that your Chambers has been producing...

Well it's been a long 4 months. But finally it is done!
The appliance guy's truck hadn't pulled out of the driveway before I had the tombstone unwrapped and in the oven.
He checked all the gas fittings, checked over all my work and proclaimed it good. He said that the safety system was hooked up perfectly. Those of you attempting to do it yourself now have a known and well documented path to follow. Enjoy!

Nothing tastes as good as a good home-cooked meal in your very own Chambers range!

And after a good home-cooked meal, nothing is better than a good home-baked dessert!

And now that there are fresh-baked cookies, my wife is suddenly feeling a lot better; she's got her appetite back!
If Mark doesn't have any "ready-made" photos of the service compartment door, let me know. I'll snap a picture or two for you tomorrow.
I should have the rust and paint off that area tomorrow!!! WOOOOHOOOO! That means I'll be ready to paint tomorrow afternoon.
I did not need to remove the service cabinet door for my restoration. So I have no photos of that area, sorry!
Mark,
Come on, all this time trying to find the source of the leak and no mention of what the serviceman did to fix your stove! The suspense has been killing me. Please fill us in.
Frank
By the way, cool stove.
Hey Mark,
I am so happy for you - the photos of you and your wife are precious! GOOD JOB!!! Very impressive, and thank you for your rigorous documentation and sharing.
Oh sorry, forgot to mention about the leaks. The service guy found ZERO LEAKS! For a detector he used (get this) toy bubble solution! He did not have it in a spray jar, it was in an old coke bottle! Wiped it on each connection with his finger and used a trained nose to back it up.
He said the smell we were getting from the oven was not gas, but rather a combination of the thermal rustoleum paint and perhaps a residue of oven cleaner smoking off. The smell cleared up all by itself while calibrating the oven flame height and later when making pizza and cookies.
So anyway I felt kinda proud that my gas-plumbing work turned out to be spot-on, but also I feel good tonight knowing that a professional appliance tech from a reputable local company has given the stove the once-over and passed it with flying colors.
I also watched what he did and learned a bit about the art of adjusting the flame height and color. It's not a science. There is a complex interplay between the jet adjustment and the air intake to arrive at a perfect flame.
Fat futures,
It looks like Mark doesn't have any of the photo's that I am needing. If you have some, please send them to me at ... I would surely appreciate it...
